How To Improve Your Life
In Four Steps

If you feel an urge to improve your life, it’s because you live in a time of massive local and global change.

As new social, economic and political shifts occur, you may find yourself adrift; split from those structures that defined your life. As the world changes, so will you. As institutional patterns collapse, so will your psychological patterns.

As you review your life, you may feel restless and dissatisfied. You may see that you are not where you want to be. You may see that you are not who you longed to be. And you may see that you don’t have the things you need. In addition, when you project your established patterns into the future, you’ll find that they don’t take you where you want to go.

You’ll feel an urge to improve your life—if you feel a need to re-view, re-cognize, re-orient, re-map, and re-invent your life.

This mental and experiential journey, this quest to improve your life, will take you through four territories: inventory, exploration, discovery, and assimilation.

Improve Your Life By Taking An Inventory

In retrospect, the journey of your life may be either disappointing, because you feel you could have made better use of your talents, or a train wreck, because a singular miscalculation created a tangled stream of effects.

While you may have tried to readjust your course, you couldn’t escape the loop of consequences. With each readjustment only the names and nuances, places and politics, schemes and scenarios changed, not the psychic drives that renewed your dramas. Although you tried hard to change, you failed. Each attempt made things worse. Your relationships, careers, and prospects didn’t match up with who you were trying to be. They didn’t fit what you were trying to do. The inner didn’t match the outer and the ideal didn’t match the real. Your life simply didn’t represent you.

Your new insight is that you were not true to your vision of yourself, that there was more to you than you expressed—and that you didn’t use your personal power to change things, to do great things, and to experience more of the richness of life.

You’ll also realize that it’s never too late to change who you might have been, never too late to be the man or woman who would complete you, never too late to regroup all your talents and roll them out again.

You’ll now stand at a crossroad: while the old way didn’t work for you anymore you have yet to find the new way.

Improve Your Life Through Exploration

While you may be drawn to create a new vision of yourself, attracted to possibility thinking, enamored by a resurrection of the dreams you left behind—perhaps as far back as your childhood—you may not find enough resources, within or without, to form a clear plan of transformation.

Ultimately, like Albert Einstein, you’ll come to the conclusion that imagination is more important than knowledge--because it’s the open psychic space to build anew. Imagination fills the gap created by memories that don’t serve you, and imagination frees you from the distress of not knowing what to do and how to do it.

As you imagine a new world, you’ll recover hope, vigor, and, above all, a revelation of new possibilities. You’ll discover time to amplify inner resources by nurturing and rebuilding your life force; time to contemplate, meditate, and journal; time to improve your nutrition, rest, and exercise; time to walk in nature, bask in friendships, and seek ancient wisdom; and time to heal your inner wounds.

Once you’ve regrouped, revitalized, and rejuvenated, you’ll be eager to expand your comprehension of how the world works. You’ll seek knowledge, inspiration, and insights. Old books, hastily consumed, will now take on an irresistible appeal, but this time you’ll read them slowly, thoughtfully, and deliberately, pondering over details, carefully working out applications.

Your final step is to try out new combinations, test novel permutations, and immerse yourself in exploring emerging potential. You may find either a new rhythm to old projects or new projects with an old rhythm. Not only will you restructure your days but you’ll also break free of the urge to belong, conform, and be part of the norm.

Improve Your Life Through Discovery

As you rummage through your past, ruminate over your present, and reflect over your favorite interests, you’ll download insights from the Universe and find fresh interpretations. You’ll, finally, grasp the way things can be for you.

You’ll notice what has worked out for you and amplify those patterns to yield greater returns. You’ll find your groove. And you’ll discover things that both please you and contribute to the greater good. You’ll find a way to be both your best self and to fit into the world much better than you could have ever imagined.

Yet it will not be entirely a seamless transition from within to without, because as your power in the world unfolds, you’ll also discover your constrictions, inhibitions, and blocks. You’ll rediscover all those constraints that had always held you back, constraints that you may not have fully acknowledged because of your preoccupation with past calamities. Through introspection, healing inner wounds, and re-decision, you’ll have to knock these out before you can manifest your ideals.

Improve Your Life Through Assimilation

At the time you were deconstructing your past and reconstructing your future, you may have thought that there would be no end to the shifts necessary to reinvent everything that had shaped your life, but a time will come when all your work at clearing, deepening, persisting, magnifying, and changing will finally be assimilated. You’ll discover the power to express a more earnest and authentic self.

Slowly who you always wanted to be in the world will begin emerging, and your vision, personal power, and mission will take on form and substance. Now, to your delight, you’ll find that you have the courage to do what you’d always wanted to do and to be the person you always knew you were inside.

The Journey Of Self-Recovery

As your world shifts, so will you. You’ll embark on a personal journey of inventory, exploration, discovery, and assimilation.

This journey of self-discovery culminates in reinvention; and, along the way, it may feel too much for you; but, as you persist, you’ll find a new surge of enthusiasm to be the person you’ve always wanted to be. Eventually, indecision will firm into decisiveness as you explore, first within, then without, how to bring about the changes you desire.

This journey of self-discovery is both overwhelming and exciting.

Others will be sharing this journey with you, each in their own way and at their own pace. Each journey is unique because each person is unique and exceptional.

The world is changing and you’re changing with it and all that is required of you as this happens is that you be willing to grow. Resistance only reinforces suffering, while cooperating with your inner world and coordinating it with the outer world will create something extraordinary, something that you cannot yet imagine, something that will bring out the best in you.

When you feel the forces of external change outside you coercing you to make changes within you, it's a call to improve your life.
